Lanie hung back at the bar with a drink in her hand, occasionally sipping through her straw as she watched the stage. The club was small, a bit grimy, and it didn’t smell the greatest. But it was packed with people, and those people gave full attention to the band on stage. Lovelife rocked in unison as they played. The music was slow, crunchy, ethereal, with a steady beat and crashing crescendos. It was layered and textured, but it still shared a lot of similarities with more upbeat pop. Lanie enjoyed it. And she enjoyed even more watching Carrie command the crowd.

Her voice was pretty, subtle yet powerful, and often times haunting. It complimented the music well, and the audience obviously agreed. Everybody looked up to Carrie as she sung, her voice yet another instrument to create that musical feeling. Women and men alike gazed at her, transfixed as though they wanted to be her—or at least be near her. Carrie wore a well-fitted black dress, which only came down to about mid-thigh, with a pair of black mary janes and white ankle socks on her feet. Despite the surroundings—a dive bar off the beaten path—both Carrie and the rest of the band were going big. It was impressive and magical.

Bobbing her head with the music, Lanie looked on and adored her girlfriend. This was a side of Carrie she had never seen. It was a far cry from Carrie the flight attendant. That was a job, but this was Carrie in her element. That normal, everyday Carrie had a certain shyness to her. But this Carrie wasn’t shy at all. On stage, performing, practicing her art, this Carrie was enchanting and confident and happy.

It was eye opening.

Carrie had announced the band’s final song for the night, and they thundered into it as though it came from nowhere. Jee swung her dark hair around as she leaned into the keyboard. Luke had his back to the audience, head down and nodding with the beat as he hovered near Alan on the drums. Up front, Carrie slowly danced along with the music, swaying as though she were intoxicated. But she was just feeling the music, and as her time came she approached the microphone and parted her lips. The crowd was enthralled.

“Certain, well I’ve never been,” Carrie sung steadily into the microphone. “If I come running, won’t you please let me in.”

A sea of heads bobbed in the audience, arms casually swaying, shoulders gently moving. It was a demure kind of dancing. It fit the music perfectly. Lanie took another drink from her glass, as her eyes remained on Carrie. She felt in that moment, listening to Carrie’s voice lead the crowd, watching her perform her passion, that this was love. It had to be. What Lanie felt for Carrie wasn’t like anything she had ever experienced before. It was something otherworldly and it felt wonderful.

“Thank you,” said Carrie with a smile as the song came to an end and the audience cheered and applauded.
